Without rockets, we wouldn't be able to explore space or even launch satellites into orbit. So, when it's all about moving through space, we rely on rockets to carry all the propellant needed for propulsion.

Defense Use of Rockets

While rockets are primarily associated with space exploration, they have also found a significant place in defense technology. In the defense world, rockets are used to propel warheads towards their targets. When these rockets have guidance systems, they are referred to as missiles. However, unguided rockets are simply called rockets. Some of the most well-known rockets include anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, which are used for high-speed, long-range engagements with enemy targets. These missiles can travel several miles, making them highly effective in combat situations.
On a larger scale, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are used to deliver multiple nuclear warheads across vast distances, often thousands of miles away. Meanwhile, anti-ballistic missiles work to intercept and neutralize these threats. Though rockets have been tested for reconnaissance purposes, such as the Ping-Pong rocket, which was launched to gather information on enemy movements, they haven't yet become widely used for defense surveillance.

Rockets in Science & Research

Rockets are also used extensively in science and research, particularly in the form of sounding rockets. These rockets carry scientific instruments into the upper atmosphere, typically between 50 kilometers (31 miles) and 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) above the Earth's surface. One of the most famous moments in rocket history was in 1946 when the first images of Earth from space were captured using a V-2 rocket. These rockets are still crucial in gathering scientific data about our atmosphere and the cosmos.
Moreover, rocket sleds, propelled by rocket engines, can achieve incredibly high speeds, setting world records such as Mach 8.5, which is 8.5 times the speed of sound. This extreme speed is used in various high-speed research experiments, particularly in testing the effects of high-velocity impacts and accelerations.

Spaceflight and the Role of Rockets

When it comes to space exploration, rockets are the undisputed champions of propulsion. Larger rockets are typically launched from specially designed pads that offer stable support during ignition. Their high exhaust velocity, ranging from 2,500 to 4,500 meters per second, makes them ideal for reaching the high speeds necessary to launch spacecraft into orbit. Orbital speed, which hovers around 7,800 meters per second (28,000 kilometers per hour), is required for a rocket to successfully place satellites into their intended orbits.
Once spacecraft are propelled into orbit, they become artificial satellites, which are used for communication, weather observation, GPS navigation, and countless other commercial and scientific purposes. Rockets also serve as the primary method for sending spacecraft beyond Earth's orbit, enabling space exploration missions like those to the Moon, Mars, and even distant asteroids.
Additionally, rockets play a crucial role in rapidly changing a spacecraft's trajectory, whether it's altering an orbit or preparing for re-entry and landing. Retrorockets, for example, are used to slow down spacecraft before a parachute deploys, making for a smoother landing.

In the past, rockets were employed to propel lines to distressed ships, allowing a Breeches buoy to be used to rescue people stranded on board. Emergency flare rockets are another vital tool, helping to signal for help in remote or dangerous locations.
In some cases, rockets have even been used in crewed spaceflight to save lives. Space missions often employ launch escape systems—a small rocket capable of pulling the crew capsule away from the main vehicle in case of an emergency. These systems have been tested and successfully operated in several instances, such as when the Safety Assurance System saved the crew capsule during the failure of a N1 rocket launch. More recently, Soyuz missions have used this system to safely abort launches when necessary.
