Air New Zealand has been a pioneer in prioritizing passenger comfort, especially on ultra-long-haul flights that can last up to 18 hours.
The airline first introduced the Skycouch in 2011, which consists of three side-by-side economy seats with footrests that can be elevated to form a makeshift couch. This innovation revolutionized travel for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for extra space.
Now, the airline is set to unveil its latest creation—the Skynest, the world's first lie-flat sleep pods in economy. Initially planned to launch in September 2024, the Skynest has faced delays but is currently undergoing retrofitting on the airline's Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Passengers can expect to experience the Skynest on routes from New York to Auckland starting in early 2026.

Enhancing the Flying Experience

Air New Zealand's CEO, Greg Foran, expressed the airline's commitment to offering the best flying experience possible. The introduction of the Skynest aligns with the airline's focus on improving passenger well-being during long-haul flights. Research indicates that the first night away from home is often the most challenging in terms of getting quality sleep.
Therefore, Air New Zealand has tailored its onboard services to create a calming environment, including lighting adjustments, sleep rituals featuring teas and balms, healthier meal options, and breathable fabrics. Additionally, the airline offers meditative onscreen content known as Zentertainment to help passengers relax and prepare for rest.

Features of Air New Zealand's Skynest

The Skynest pods resemble bunk-style beds commonly used by flight attendants on extended flights or in pod hotels. Each Skynest comprises six beds arranged in a vertical stack on each side of the designated area, with a ladder providing easy access to the upper bunks.
Passengers can recline and nap in these pods, which come equipped with essentials such as pillows, sheets, blankets (changed between each use), earplugs, a reading light, and a personal USB outlet. For added privacy, each pod includes a curtain.
Passengers can book a Skynest bed for a four-hour session during the flight, with one session limit per passenger. The option is available for both Economy and Premium Economy passengers, excluding Business-class travelers.
Pricing and Future Endeavors
Although pricing details for the Skynest have yet to be finalized, estimates suggest costs ranging from $400 to $600 for a four-hour period, in addition to the standard airfare.
The Skynest's development journey began in 2020, alongside plans for a direct Auckland–New York flight, which faced delays due to pandemic-related restrictions. While the New York route successfully launched in late 2024, the updated Dreamliners with Skynests are scheduled for debut in early 2026.

Overall Cabin Improvements

In addition to the Skynest, Air New Zealand is revamping its entire aircraft fleet to enhance passenger comfort and experience. The airline is reducing total seat capacity on its Dreamliner 787-9 models to accommodate premium offerings.
Business Premier cabins will feature private pod-style seating arrangements, allowing passengers to convert their seats into lie-flat beds independently. The Business Premier Luxe option will offer even more privacy, with fully enclosed sleeping quarters and space for in-flight dining.
Moreover, Premium Economy and Economy classes will see upgrades, including larger seatback screens, additional storage options, and enhanced connectivity features. Economy passengers can opt for stretch seats with increased legroom, and all cabins will feature a Sky Pantry area for passengers to refresh and enjoy snacks and drinks at their convenience.
